“Man is a tool-using animal. Without tools he is nothing; with tools he is all”.

Thomas Carlyle.

Here is where the grumbles of the world tease out.
Removed from the noise and haste,
the quiet rasp of a bench plane repeating on wood
reminds what peace is. The neat conjoining
of a rank of hand-cut dovetails to their similarly hand-cut, companion pins
allows achievement to be enjoyed; a journey savored.                                                                                                                     The bowl turning itself, as if by magic, from a wood blank on the lathe                                                                                      is a small miracle of creation in your very hands.

Here, is where I expend myself
in shape and form; where whatever meager artist
that may dwell in me proclaims   ‘This, I am’.
Enter my shop, stay awhile and see the things I make.
Comment if you will.

But all the while, be at peace with yourself, with everyone
and with God, whatever you conceive Him to be.

I made the Contemplation Bell from an empty gas bottle. It strikes a deep note                                                                 and is ideal for getting the mind into that spiritual space required for craftsmanship.
